Manolín "El Médico de la Salsa" and the new momentum of Cuban timba
The timba legend returned to Cuba in 2024 with the album "La Calentura" and a band of young musicians. We look back at his career and his current moment.
Few voices sum up Cuban timba of the 1990s like that of Manolín "El Médico de la Salsa". His name is tied to the explosion of a style that fused salsa, son, jazz and funk into an unmistakable, dance-driven identity — and one that is enjoying fresh momentum today, both on and off the island.
From medicine to timba
Behind the nickname is Manuel González Hernández, who was studying Medicine when he was discovered by José Luis "El Tosco" Cortés, leader of NG La Banda. From that encounter came the moniker that has followed him ever since: "El Médico de la Salsa" — the salsa doctor. Through the 1990s and 2000s he built a discography that marked several generations, with records such as "Para mi gente" (1995), "De buena fe" (1997), "Jaque mate" (1998), the live album "El puente" (Hialeah, 2001), "Giro total" (2003) and "Tiene que ser Manolín" (2012). His song "El puente" became a symbol: a call for rapprochement between Cubans on the island and those in Miami.
The comeback with "La Calentura"
After roughly twenty years living outside Cuba — mainly in the United States, and also in Spain — Manolín made a much-anticipated return to the island in 2024. His new album, "La Calentura", was released on digital platforms on 6 June 2024 and presented live on 5 July 2024 at the Salón Rojo del Capri in Havana. He is backed by a band of young musicians he affectionately calls "los chamacos", a bet on a new generation that confirms his energy on stage remains undimmed. On stage he keeps his signature approach: a full live band, no playback, with a horn section, classic Cuban percussion (timbales, congas and bongó), piano and bass.
Cuban timba in Europe
Manolín's return comes at a time when timba and Cuban salsa continue to fill venues and festivals across Europe, from Spain to Italy, France, the Netherlands and Germany. His repertoire — able to connect both with those who have danced to him for decades and with younger audiences — fits squarely with that demand for live Cuban music.
